The Auratus Cichlid (Melanochromis auratus)

One of the most striking and aggressive members of the Mbuna group from Lake Malawi. Known for their vibrant coloration and territorial nature, Auratus Cichlids are often recommended for more experienced aquarists. Males are typically dark with light blue or white markings, while females display the opposite with a yellow to gold body and dark stripes.

Due to their aggressive nature, they require large tanks with ample space, hiding spots, and sturdy plants like Anubias or Java Fern. Auratus Cichlids are mouthbrooders, with females incubating eggs in their mouths for up to 28 days before releasing free-swimming fry.
