Blood Parrot Cichlid

Species: Amphilophus citrinellus x Paraneetroplus synspilus
Common Name: Blood Parrot
Origin: Hybrid fish first created in Taiwan around 1986

Appearance:

  • Typically bright orange, with red, yellow, or gray variations also possible. Recognizable by their round body, beak-like head, and large eyes.

Size:

  • Current Size: Approximately 5 cm
  • Max Size: Approximately 20 cm

Diet:

  • Omnivores. They enjoy a variety of foods, including flake, live, frozen, and freeze-dried foods. Sinking pellet foods are recommended.

Behavior:

  • Peaceful. Best kept with non-aggressive fish due to their inability to compete for food or territory.

Tank Compatibility:

  • Ideal tankmates include mid-sized tetras, danios, angelfish, and catfish.

Tank Setup:

  • Roomy tank with plenty of hiding places like rocks, driftwood, and clay pots. Fine substrate is recommended as these fish like to dig.

Water Parameters:

  • pH Range: 6.5 – 7.5
  • Temperature: 26°C – 28°C

Filtration & Maintenance:

  • High-volume filtration and regular water changes are crucial due to the high waste production.

Health Considerations:

  • Watch for high levels of nitrite and phosphate, which can lead to harmful algae. Common diseases include ich parasites, swim bladder disease, and bacterial infections.

Breeding:

  • Although blood parrots may mate and lay eggs, they are generally infertile. In rare cases, successful spawnings have occurred when crossed with non-hybrid fish.

Additional Notes:

  • Foods high in beta-carotene and canthaxanthin help maintain their vibrant colors. Regular water changes are essential, especially during breeding and for the health of the fry.
