The Red Fin Danio is a striking variant of the zebra danio, characterized by its long, flowing fins. Known for its hardiness, it thrives in both heated and unheated aquarium setups. These lively and playful fish are best kept in schools of at least 4-6 individuals to exhibit their natural behavior. They typically grow to about 5-6cm in length.
As highly active shoaling fish, Red Fin Danios are most comfortable in the upper region of the aquarium. Purchasing them in a group ensures their well-being, as individual specimens may languish alone. While they can be boisterous and prone to chasing each other and other fish, they are generally good community fish that rarely exhibit aggression toward others. However, they may accidentally nip fins, and like most fish, they will consume eggs and small fish that fit into their mouths.
Ideally, Red Fin Danios should be kept in a spacious tank with plenty of room for their active swimming. They prefer environments with a current, mimicking their natural habitat in fast-flowing streams. Subtropical temperatures ranging from 20 to 22 degrees Celsius (low seventies degrees Fahrenheit) are suitable, but a tight-fitting lid is essential as they are known to be proficient jumpers.
