Natural Habitat

  • Environment: Clear, fast-flowing streams and rivers with rocky or sandy substrates and submerged vegetation
  • Water Conditions: Well-oxygenated water with moderate current
  • Temperature Range: 24–26°C (75–79°F)

 

Physical Description

  • Body Shape: Slender, elongated body built for efficient swimming
  • Coloration: Silver-gray body with a bold black horizontal stripe running from nose to tail (stripe may fade depending on mood)
  • Fins: Transparent; simple and unmarked

 

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons; larger preferred for groups
  • Water Parameters:
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Temperature: 24–26°C (75–79°F)
    • Water Flow: Moderate
  • Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel
  • Décor: Driftwood, rocks, dense planting; open swimming spaces important
  • Filtration: Good filtration with moderate current

 

Diet

  • Type: Omnivorous (primary algae grazer)
  • Preferred Foods: Algae, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), sinking pellets, occasional live or frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp)
  • Feeding Frequency: Once or twice daily

 

Behavior & Tank Mates

  • Temperament:
    • Peaceful and active
    • Best kept in groups of 5 or more to minimize territorial behavior
  • Compatible Tank Mates:
    • Peaceful community fish (Tetras, Barbs, Danios, Gouramis)
  • Behavior Notes:
    • Excellent at eating hair algae and black beard algae
    • May become slightly territorial as they mature if kept singly

 

Breeding

  • Spawning Method: Egg scatterer (breeding in aquariums is extremely rare)
  • Breeding Conditions:
    • Successfully bred in commercial farms with hormone treatments
  • Fry Care:
    • Not common in home setups
